Aliwal July 2007
I am sure that those who did not attend this past weekends trip to Aliwal would love to hear how bad it was and that we did not see anything, well sorry but this past weekend was an absolute success.

Firstly apologies for this being so late but this damn Tour de France!

I am going to make it as easy on the guys who didn't attend but it is going to be difficult. We were a total 38 divers so we basically took over LaLa Manzi and Oceans Alive Diving. Carl, the skipper for Ferdie, has now taken over from Ferdie, who is up at the Whaler and there was not one complaint against these guys, absolutely professional service!

The sea conditions were not the best and lived up to its name the rides were very bumpy and the current was pumping making the wrecks impossible to dive apart from Hardy's first dive. The viz was not too great but if I could see all that we saw this past weekend then I want these conditions all the time.

The guys saw dolphins, whales, eagle rays, raggies, turtles, turtles, turtles, brindle bass, eels, rays, rays, rays, potato bass, and some close extreme encounters with black tips (oceanic?). I believe that the only person who didn't see a shark was Niel Kemp who insisted on feeding them from the boat....... aaaah and that bring us to our own local "chummer" Dean Temlet. To experience close encounters with these black tips you pretty much have to leave the reef and drift in the ocean, I wondered why they came to see us but Dean proved why... free food and lots of it.

The instructors there and Hardy, who learned this first hand, were taught that you need to warn our students in the future that when they do a backwards roll into the ocean that they are aware that it could possibly dislocate their shoulders, thanks to Philip for the lesson. On a serious note, the situation was handled quickly and professionally and great to see.

Our beach braai was cancelled due to the rain but we made the best of it on the Lala Manzi veranda and all those who in the past had been punished by Hardy would be happy to know that he got his own back as he too graduated AND it was his first official WUC DM trip.

To all of you who attended, Thanks! And to those who didn't make it, there might be a trip in October to dive with the whales, so keep on checking your mails. In the mean time, have a look at some of the photo's of the weekend.

Please join us at the club and get all the weekend's stories from all who were there.
