CMAS-ISA 1 STAR DIVER CERTIFICATECMAS EQUIVALENT – 1 STAR DIVER (Depth limit - 18 meters)
OBJECTIVE
To supply a framework for the training of Novice Divers enabling them to obtain the One Star Sport Diver qualification.
PREREQUISITES
- Must be at least 14 years old.
- Must submit a medical certificate clearing the holder as fit to participate in the sport of underwater diving before participating in any practical training. A medical practitioner using the CMAS-ISA Sport Diving Medical Examination Form must have carried out the medical examination. The certificate must not be older than 3 months where an individual is attending a CMAS-ISA course for the first time, and not older than 12 months when the One Star certificate or any other subsequent certificate is finally issued.
- Must pass the theory examination as set by a panel of Instructors, or as set by CMAS-ISA. A pass mark of 65% is compulsory.
- Must pass the prescribed practical tests.
- Must log at least 5 scuba dives in open water and have these verified by at least an in-date Two Star Instructor.
- The dives are to be of at least 15 minutes duration and to a depth not exceeding 18m. NOTE: Parts 3, 4 & 5 must be completed within 1 year of writing the theory examination. Failing which, parts 3 and 4 must be re-done. The above-mentioned prerequisites are the minimum required for the CMAS-ISA One Star Diver Certificate.
CMAS-ISA 2 STAR ADVANCED DIVER CERTIFICATECMAS EQUIVALENT – 2 STAR DIVER (Depth limit - 30 meters)
OBJECTIVE
To supply a framework for the training of One Star Divers enabling them to obtain the 2 Star Advanced Diver qualification. The Two Star diver is a diver who has gained some open water diving experience and is considered ready to take part in dives partnered by a diver of at least the same or a higher grade. The Two Star diver does not have sufficient experience to lead One Star divers on open water dives.
PREREQUISITES
- Must be at least 15 years old.
- Prior to participating in any practical training, the student must submit a medical certificate clearing the holder fit to participate in the sport of underwater diving. A medical practitioner, using the CMAS-ISA Sport Diver medical examination form, must have carried out the medical examination not more than 12 months previously.
- The candidate must hold a CMAS-ISA One Star Diver certificate or approved equivalent certificate.
- The candidate must have logged at least 15 scuba dives to enrol on the course.
- Must pass the theory evaluation as set by a panel of Instructors or by CMAS-ISA. A pass mark of 65% is compulsory. Must pass the prescribed practical evaluations.
- The qualifying/practical dives are to be supervised by at least a qualified Two Star Advanced diver. The dives should be of duration not less than 15 minutes and to a depth of not less than 10m. All of the following types of qualifying dives must be included: Night dive, Boat dive, Freshwater dive, Seawater dive, Low visibility dive and a 30m dive. At least 5 dives must be to a depth exceeding 18m. A decompression chamber dive does not qualify. NOTE: Parts 5, 6 & 7 must be completed within 1 year of writing the theory exam. Failing which parts 5 and 6 must be re-done. Dives exceeding 18m will only be taken as part of the qualifying prerequisites once the student has enrolled on the course. The above-mentioned prerequisites are the minimum required for the CMAS Two Star Advanced Diver Certificate.
CMAS-ISA 3 STAR MASTER DIVER CERTIFICATECMAS EQUIVALENT – 3 STAR DIVER (Depth limit – 40 meters)
OBJECTIVE
To supply a framework for the training of 2 Star Advanced Divers, enabling them to obtain the 3 Star Master Diver qualification. (Recommended maximum depth – 40 metres). The 3 Star Master Diver is a fully trained, experienced and responsible diver who is considered competent to lead other divers of any grade in open water.
PREREQUISITES
- To attend the 3 Star Master Diver Course/Seminar
- Must be at least 16 years old.
- Must be in possession of a medical certificate clearing the holder as fit to participate in the sport of underwater diving. A medical practitioner using the CMAS-ISA Sport Diver medical examination form must have carried out the medical examination not more than 12 months previously.
- Must hold the CMAS-ISA 2 Star Advanced Diver certificate.
- Must hold the CMAS-ISA Rescue Certificate.
- A minimum of 40 dives is required to enrol on the course, of which 20 should be deeper than 18 metres. These dives must include the following:
- Seawater dives;
- Fresh water dives;
- Boat dives;
- Low visibility dives (less than 1 metre visibility)
- Night dives.
- To apply for the 3 Star Master Diver Certificate:
- Must attend a 3 Star Master Diver course run by registered 2 Star Instructor (Course Convenor). The course must include the following dives:
- 2 x 30-40 metre dives;
- 1 compass dive;
- 1 low visibility dive;
- 1 search and recovery dive;
- 1 dive where light underwater work is performed;
- 1 dive where the diver is roped to a surface tender.
- Must pass a CMAS-ISA theory examination paper. A pass mark of 65% is compulsory;
- Must pass the prescribed practical tests.
- After previous qualification, the candidate must have logged at least 40 additional dives of at least 15 minutes duration (except where the special nature of the dive precludes this), of which 20 must be deeper than 18 metres. Only 2 categories of dives may be logged per dive. These 40 dives must include a combination of the following categories:
- 10x Sea-water dives;
- 10x Fresh water dives;
- 10x Boat dives;
- 20x Dives to a depth of between 30 and 40 metres. Two dive plans must be submitted for approval and must be kept for future reference. Two of these dives may be done in a decompression chamber.
- 5x Low visibility dives (less than 1m)
- 5x Compass course dives
- 5x Night dives
- 2x Dives incorporating underwater searches using different search patterns on each dive
- 1x Dive where light underwater work is performed
- 1x Dive where the diver is roped to a surface tender Note: The logged dives should demonstrate the diver’s broad experience of diving under varying conditions and ver a period of time suitable for the accumulation of skills and knowledge. The log should indicate those dives where the diver has been responsible for other divers or for the planning of the diving operation.
- Act as a surface tender for a roped diver.
- Simulate a rescue from a depth of 20m to the surface making use of buddy breathing. Simulate E.A.R. on the surface.
- Must apply for the certificate through the Course Convenor. A valid medical certificate as stated in point 2, as well as proof of dives done as per point 9.i-x must accompany the application.
- Dives deeper than 30m may only be done once enrolled on the course and must be done with and signed off by a diver certified to dive deeper than 30m. Note: Part 12 must be done within 1 year of writing the theory examination. Failing which, parts 7 & 8 must be re-done. The prerequisites mentioned above are the minimum required for the CMAS-ISA 3 Star Master Diver Certificate.
CMAS-ISA 4 STAR DIVER CERTIFICATE CMAS EQUIVALENT – 4 STAR DIVER
OBJECTIVE
To supply the individual diver with a framework of requirements to enable him/her to comply with the requirement of this advanced diving qualification.
SYLLABUS
The candidate has to obtain advanced knowledge and experience to enable him/her to submit a thesis related to diving. The candidate has to accumulate additional knowledge and experience in practical course to comply with the requirements.
PREREQUISITES
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Must have at least 5 years continuous membership of CMAS-ISA, a SAUU affiliated Club, School or Association.
- Must have served on a Club or Provincial Committee for at least a year in one or more of the following capacities.
- President/Chairman Scuba Competitions Officer
- Treasurer Scuba Records Officer
- Secretary Medical Officer
- Scuba training Officer Equipment Officer
- The candidate must have held a CMAS-ISA 3 Star Master Diver Certificate for at least 2 years.
- Must have logged at least 100 hours of varied scuba diving.
- Must submit a medical certificate clearing the holder as fit to participate in the sport of underwater diving. A medical practitioner using the CMAS-ISA Sport Diver medical examination form, must have carried out the medical examination not more than 12 months previously.
- The candidate has the choice of obtaining his/her certificate by either submitting a thesis or going the practical route by obtaining certificates in the extra courses mentioned below. A minimum of 12 points is required for either route.
THE THESIS ROUTE:
- The candidate must register the thesis with the CMAS-ISA Executive Council before starting to work on it. Upon completion, the candidate must submit 8 copies to the CMAS-ISA Executive Council of the thesis, being of an acceptable and suitably high standard on some aspect closely related to diving, in which personal diving involvement is highlighted. CMAS-ISA shall then become the owner of said thesis and holds the right to publish the thesis, in part or in whole, after certification has been issued. The exception here shall be the submittal of a Diver Training manual as a thesis.
- The subject shall not have been used for any previous academic qualification.
- The thesis shall be of a length of at least 25 000 typewritten characters (± 10 typewritten pages).
- The thesis will be awarded points by the CMAS-ISA Executive Council as follows:
- The total value of the thesis is 20 points.
- The content of the thesis will be 14 points and the presentation 6 points.
- In order for the thesis to be accepted the overall average points allocated by the CMAS-ISA Executive Council shall be 12 or more.
- If the thesis average is 7 – 11, additional 6 points must be accrued in adding qualifying courses from the practical route.
- If the thesis average is 6 or less, then the thesis will be accepted as the report required under the practical route to obtain this qualification.
THE PRACTICAL ROUTE:
- The candidate must submit the following:
- A complete report on any subject or project concerned with diving in which the candidate was involved. The report must be evaluated and endorsed a referee appointed by the CMAS-ISA Executive Council.
- The report must be of a length of at least 7 500 typewritten characters.
- Proof of the successful issue of any of the following certificates to accrue 12 points:
- CMAS-ISA Three Star Instructor - 4 points
- CMAS-ISA Two Star Instructor - 3 points
- CMAS-ISA Cave Diver Zone III - 3 points
- CMAS-ISA Trimix Diver - 3 points
- CMAS-ISA Decompression Chamber Operator - 2 points
- CMAS-ISA Service Technician/Nitrox Blender/Trimix Blender - 2 points
- CMAS-ISA Cave Diver Zone II - 2 points
- CMAS-ISA Advanced Nitrox Diver - 2 points
- CMAS-ISA Wreck Diver II - 2 points
- CMAS-ISA Divemaster - 2 points
- CMAS-ISA Compressor Operator - 1 point
- CMAS-ISA Cavern Diver - 1 point
- CMAS-ISA Nitrox Diver - 1 point
- CMAS-ISA Wreck Diver I - 1 point
- CMAS-ISA Oxygen Administration - 1 point
- Must submit 8 copies of a C.V. to the CMAS-ISA Executive Council of his/her personal diving career (approx. 3,000 words) together with either a thesis or proof of the practical route as described in 7a & 7b above.
- The CMAS-ISA Executive Council reserves the right to require the candidate to present himself/herself for an oral examination should they deem it necessary
- The CMAS-ISA Executive Council will inform the candidate whether his/her application for the 4 Star Diver qualification was successful or not. This letter of approval must be submitted with the application for the certificate.
- The candidate must satisfy the CMAS-ISA Executive Council that he/she is a worthy recipient of the CMAS-ISA 4 Star Diver certificate. Their support and approval must therefore also be endorsed on the certificate record card before application.
- After approval by the CMAS-ISA Executive Council, the candidate must apply for the certificate through the referee appointed by the CMAS-ISA Executive Council. NOTE: Thesis topics have to be registered with the CMAS-ISA Executive Council in advance and must be approved by them. Some indication of the proposed content must be submitted with the application for registration. The CMAS-ISA Executive Council will appoint a mentor/referee for the candidate. The prerequisites mentioned above are the minimum required for the CMAS-ISA Four Star Diver Certificate. *
CMAS-ISA DIVEMASTER CERTIFICATE CMAS EQUIVALENT - NONE
OBJECTIVE
The importance of the CMAS Divemaster to the overall CMAS training program and to each individual Instructor cannot be overstated. Divemaster training is the first leadership level in the CMAS progression. The rating denotes and individual who:
- Has a high level of personal diving skill and knowledge of diving theory.
- Is fully qualified to lead other divers on diving excursions and act as an underwater tour guide.
- Has had significant training in how to assist an instructor during training activities.
- Is able to assume a role of responsibility for the welfare of other divers in his charge.
The goals of CMAS-ISA Divemaster training are to:
- Enable the candidate to organise, conduct and supervise recreational diving activities, both land- and boat-based.
- Enable the candidate to effectively act as an instructor assistant to a CMAS-ISA Instructor.
COURSE STANDARDS
The CMAS-ISA Divemaster course is designed to train qualified individuals as supervisory personnel. In this role, the Divemaster may either oversee general diving activities or serve as an underwater guide. The Divemaster may also fulfil important duties as an instructional assistant and may conduct Environmental Orientation dives.
PREREQUISITES
To attend the Divemaster training Course an individual must:
- Be 17 years of age or older. (Note: The Divemaster candidate is to be 17 by the starting date of training.)
- Must be in possession of a medical certificate clearing the student as fit to participate in the sport of underwater diving, prior to participating in any practical training. A medical practitioner using the CMAS-ISA Sport Diver medical examination form, must have carried out the medical examination not more than 12 months previously.
- Be certified as a CMAS-ISA Three Star Master Diver or an equivalent rating. This prerequisite is primarily based on individual competency in various aspects of diving. This competency level within CMAS is defined by the Three Star Master Diver certification. Therefore, the term equivalency as stated in this standard is defined as proof of certification beyond entry level; and a minimum of 50 logged open-water dives documenting experience in the following areas: night, deep (30m) and navigation (as documented in the bearer’s individual book).
- Be certified as a CMAS-ISA Rescue Diver or an equivalent rating. The term equivalency as stated in this standard is defined as proof of certification in diving rescue from a training agency other than CMAS-ISA. The Divemaster candidate is required to undergo a Diver-Rescue Assessment. If the candidate has minor problems during this assessment, you may work with the candidate until the assessment is satisfactorily complete. If an equivalent certification is accepted, the candidate is required to submit proof of CPR and first aid training within the past three years.
To apply for the Divemaster Certificate:
- The individual must attend a Divemaster Course run by an In-date CMAS Two Star Instructor. (Course Convenor.) • The course must include the following theory lectures (as set out in the Divemaster Training Workbook): • Course Orientation
- Dive Planning
- Dive Management and Control
- Supervising students in training
- Boat Diving
- Dive Tables
- The Divemaster as a Tour Guide.
- Must pass a theory evaluation as set out by the Course Convenor.
- Must pass the practical tests as set in the course sequence.
- Plan and act, as Divemaster on at least 5 dives with no less than 4 divers per group, to a minimum depth of 18 metres. Dive no 1 and 2 must be done on the course, but the last 3 dives may be done under the direct supervision of an Instructor or Divemaster appointed by the Course Convenor.
- Have completed and logged at least 50 open-water dives.
- The candidate must satisfy the Course Convenor that he is a worthy recipient of the CMAS-ISA Divemaster certificate.
NOTE: Application for the Divemaster certificate must be done within 6 months after attending the Divemaster course, failing this, the complete course must be re-done.
The prerequisites mentioned above are the minimum required for the CMAS-ISA Divemaster certificate.
CMAS-ISA 2 STAR INSTRUCTOR COURSE CMAS EQUIVALENT – 2 STAR INSTRUCTOR
INTRODUCTION
The CMAS-ISA 2 Star Instruction course is designed to train and qualify approved candidates to CMAS 2 Star Instructor level. These instructors may teach all levels of scuba diving as well as specialities and issue CMAS-ISA certification. In-date Two Star Instructors are voting members of CMAS-ISA.
This course is designed to ensure that candidates who receive certification as CMAS-ISA Two Star Instructors, have the knowledge, skills and proper attitude to be able to promote and encourage the education and training of the general public in the principles and techniques of safely participating in underwater scuba activities.
INSTRUCTOR QUALIFICATIONS
An in-date Two Star CMAS-ISA Instructor may independently teach CMAS-ISA sanctioned entry level Skin Diving and Scuba Diving courses up to Two Star level. Dive Master and Three Star may only be presented after certifying at least 35 One Star or Two Star divers.
An in-date CMAS-ISA Two Star Instructor may independently teach all the CMAS-ISA speciality courses, except Technical Courses, if he/she:
- Is in possession of the appropriate speciality qualification.
- Have assisted on two additional courses of that speciality (where applicable).
- Have certified at least 35 One Star or Two Star divers.
- Have met all additional prerequisites a speciality may have.
PREREQUISITES PRIOR TO ENTERING THE COURSE
Candidates for the Two Star Instructor Course must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Must be in possession of a medical certificate clearing the holder as fit to participate in the sport of underwater diving. A medical practitioner using the CMAS-ISA Sport Diver medical examination form, must have carried out the medical examination not more than 12 months previously.
- Be in possession of a CMAS-ISA Dive Master (or currently certified Divemaster qualification from a recognised Diver Training Organisation) and a CMAS-ISA Three Star Master Diver qualification.
CMAS-ISA THREE STAR INSTRUCTOR TRAINER CERTIFICATE CMAS EQUIVALENT – THREE STAR INSTRUCTOR
GENERAL
The CMAS-ISA Three Star Instructor Trainer course is designed to promote Two Star Instructors to train and qualify sport divers as well as Instructors and issue CMAS-ISA certification. In-date Three Star Instructor Trainers are voting members of CMAS-ISA.
OBJECTIVES
To evaluate Three Star Instructor Trainer candidates in the training of Instructors according to CMAS-ISA Instructor course standards.To ensure that candidates who receive certification as CMAS-ISA Three Star Instructors Trainers have the knowledge, skills and proper attitude to be able to promote and encourage the education and training of Two Star instructors in the principles and techniques of the tuition of safely participating in underwater activities.
INSTRUCTOR QUALIFICATIONS
An in-date CMAS-ISA Three Star Instructor Trainer may independently teach all CMAS-ISA speciality courses, except Technical Courses, unless he/she:
• Is in possession of the appropriate speciality qualification for that Technical course
PREREQUISITES FOR ENTERING THE COURSE
Candidates for the Three Star Instructor Course must:
- Be at least 21 years old
- Must be in possession of a medical certificate clearing the holder as fit to participate in the sport of underwater diving. A medical practitioner using the CMAS-ISA Sport Diver medical examination form, must have carried out the medical examination not more than 12 months previously.
- Be in possession of a CMAS-ISA Two Star Instructor certificate for at least one year, from date of certification and proof of certification or involvement in the training of at least 25 Dive Masters or Three Star Diver Students, or a combination thereof.
